AA2A Residency – Chelmsford College 2013/2014
This experience has provided me with rich and diverse opportunities to undertake consultation, collaboration and curatorial projects with students as well as time to further develop my ideas.
Outcome = multi-layer use of digital manipulation of imagery to achieve a link between the digital and painterly: An ephemeral journey using technical, process-driven media I feel uncomfortable using. An awkward marriage of digital initiatives, print and collage based ideas. A desire to ensure the end product would return me back to my painterly roots.
It did! Phew!
Painting remains, for me, the most durable contemporary method of recording my observations. It is the culminating point of this journey.
It has the final sensory say in capturing the essence of that idea.
But, I have realised the importance of digital design pathways, print and experimental conversation to truly explore a greater sense of depth and multi-layering facets to a painting.
The removal of words from my work meant I was able to delve into pure figurative discussion, and a single form spoke more than a thousand words had done before.
To be able to document and observe in the modern world, for me, involves being able to capture something interrogative, interactive and awe-consuming. I did this with the help of digital support, colour and allowing myself time to paint, much time.
Space and time to play = invaluable.
